DR JENNY LUNT INSPIRES PUPILS WITH LECTURE ON NATURE CONNECTEDNESS AND WELLBEING
Written by Assistant Head (Academic), Mr Tom Howell
On the evening of Wednesday 13 November, Lower Sixth Geography, Biology, and Psychology pupils gathered eagerly in the Science Priory to attend an insightful lecture led by Dr Jenny Lunt, an experienced Health Psychologist and lecturer from the University of Derby. Dr Lunt captivated her audience with a stimulating exploration of nature connectedness, its importance for health and sustainability, and the practical interventions that promote stronger connections with the natural world.
Dr Lunt began by defining nature connectedness, an area gaining attention in health and environmental studies. She highlighted the significant health benefits of spending time in nature, from reducing stress to improving mood and cognitive function, as well as its impact on environmental sustainability. This, she noted, makes nature connectedness essential in fostering environmentally conscious behaviour and societal wellbeing.
The lecture delved into various interventions aimed at fostering this connection, including biophilic design - an approach that incorporates natural elements into built environments - and pathways designed to reconnect people with nature. Dr Lunt also encouraged pupils to consider the pathways they could integrate into their own lives to foster personal wellbeing and environmental stewardship.
Dr Lunt, a Chartered Psychologist and Registered Practitioner with the Health Care Professions Council, also presented a critical evaluation of these interventions, drawing on her expertise and extensive research background. In her role as Programme Lead for the MSc in Behaviour Change at the University of Derby, Dr Lunt teaches students to apply behavioural science in public health, environmental sustainability, and workplace wellbeing - an emphasis that resonated throughout her talk.
The lecture was exceptionally well-received, with pupils leaving inspired by Dr Lunt’s insights and motivated to deepen their own connections with the natural world.
