INSPIRING MINDS AT REPTON

At Repton School, we pride ourselves on offering an enriching academic and cultural programme that broadens the horizons of our pupils beyond the curriculum. A vital part of this is our visiting speaker series, which brings extraordinary individuals from diverse fields to share their insights, experiences, and expertise. Recently, we had the privilege of hosting two exceptional speakers: WO2 Johnson Beharry VC and Professor Tiffany Stern.

A Lesson in Resilience from WO2 Johnson Beharry VC

We welcomed WO2 Johnson Beharry, a serving recipient of the Victoria Cross, to deliver a lecture that left the audience inspired and deeply moved. WO2 Beharry’s story is one of extraordinary heroism and resilience.

In 2004, while serving in Iraq, WO2 Beharry was ambushed under intense enemy fire. Despite being shot in the helmet and facing overwhelming odds, he drove his stricken vehicle out of danger, saving his crew in the process. Barely a month later, he sustained severe injuries from a Rocket Propelled Grenade attack but once again demonstrated unparalleled bravery, ensuring the safety of his comrades before succumbing to his wounds and falling into a coma.

Hearing him recount these harrowing events, alongside his life journey, was a profound experience for pupils and staff alike. WO2 Beharry’s story reminds us of the values of courage, selflessness, and perseverance, leaving a lasting impact on everyone who attended.

Shakespeare and Beyond with Professor Tiffany Stern

In another intellectually stimulating session, pupils had the opportunity to learn from Professor Tiffany Stern, Deputy Director of The Shakespeare Institute. As a leading scholar in early modern performance, theatrical documents, and book history, Professor Stern brought her immense expertise to Repton, offering a fascinating exploration of Shakespeare’s works and their historical context.

Professor Stern’s engaging lecture delved into the interplay between literary criticism, theatre history, and fashion, spanning the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. Her insights into Shakespeare’s plays and their relevance to contemporary audiences captivated the audience, sparking discussions and inspiring a deeper appreciation for the Bard’s genius.

Expanding Horizons Beyond the Classroom

These events are a testament to Repton’s commitment to fostering a culture of academic curiosity and cultural enrichment. Our visiting speaker programme, alongside competitions, workshops, and other enrichment opportunities, ensures that Reptonians are equipped with the skills and inspiration to excel in an ever-changing world.

By engaging with figures like WO2 Johnson Beharry VC and Professor Tiffany Stern, our pupils gain perspectives that challenge them to think critically, empathise with others, and strive for excellence in all aspects of life.
